By: JULIA BURFORD
The Lowlands Trail contains one of the largest areas of natural forest in the UK, and has been in existance on the same site for over 3000 years. The outer circuit walk passes through a huge swathe of magnificent trees, packed densely from the heart of the forest right up to the tree line and scattered beyond.
The terrain consists mostly of good forest tracks, with a couple of kilometres of rough, pathless moorland, map and good navigation skills needed.
The start of the walk is situationed 2 miles East of the nearest village. Transport links to here are frequent, and there are direct trains from the capital.
The route starts from the wooden cabin once inhabited by the park rangers. Open start point in Google Maps for directions.
As well as the local bird population this area is known for sigthings of deer and other large forest dwelling animals.

I found the walk to be more rewarding than I was expecting. The views from the West side looking back over the snow-capped mountains were amazing.
